We all have different attitudes towards grammar. We may be influenced by factors such as how we were taught or our own experience of learning a language. How do you feel about grammar? Is grammar a "necessary evil", the only way to understand a language, or something to be avoided as far as possible?
This unit looks at different kinds of lexical items, and considers ways of presenting them to learners. There is also an optional activity which explores vocabulary practice activities
Phonology studies the sound system of a specific language and describes the way sounds function within a given language¹
When we are learning another language it is important that we can understand what people mean when they say or write a particular thing. This unit looks at the purpose behind what people say or write and considers the way they actually do this in particuar situations.
Most of us read something in our everyday life, even if it's only an email or a cafe menu! But what exactly are we doing when we read? What considerations are there for the language classroom? This unit examines the reading skill and the subskills associated with it.
For many people writing is one of the things they do least in another language and it is often seen as a difficult skill to learn. This unit looks at the subskills that are taught to achieve accuracy and effective communication in writing and considers the different stages of the writing process.
Learners often find listening in another language a much more difficult skill to develop than the other receptive skill, reading. This unit examines the reasons why by comparing and contrasting the two productive skills, speaking and writing since these are what listeners and readers are responding to.
Many learners consider speaking to be the most important skill. Indeed, when we ask about language ability, the first question is often "Can you speak..?". This unit considers what factors help contribute towards a good speaking class and looks at the subskills involved in learning to speak in another language.
